Ranked among the most historic cities on the coast of Vietnam, most travellers head to Hoi An to enjoy a beach holiday. Renowned for its breathtaking beaches and friendly locals, Hoi An is a relatively safe tourist hub in Vietnam but that does not mean that unsavoury experiences are not a common occurrence among tourists. 1. Safety on the Beach

Hoi An's beaches are safe for swimming and water sports activities for most of the year but those who are heading to this part of Vietnam from October to March may find that the ocean is too rough. This means that it is best to avoid visiting Hoi An during this time of year as many locals who dare to spend time in the water during this time of year are known to suffer injuries and even fatalities due to less than calm ocean conditions. Tourists who are visiting Hoi An even during the peak tourist season should refrain from swimming in areas where swimming is prohibited.

2. Traffic Jams

Whether one is based at Anantara Hoi An Resort or any one of the other hotels in Hoi An, every traveller will encounter the dreaded traffic jams of the area at one time or another. It is not uncommon to see buses, cars, bicycles and large vehicles crammed together in a disorderly manner during rush hour so tourists crossing the street or walking on the sidewalks reserved for pedestrians need to be watchful. Most local drivers across Vietnam are likely to break traffic rules and speed across main roads and even ignore red lights; therefore, those who are walking on the street must be careful about oncoming vehicles. The constant honking is also something travellers will need to get used to even though it is relatively harmless.

3. Cruise Control

Boat rides and cruises are also one of the best ways to explore the coast of Hoi An but these tours can also prove hazardous to those who do not heed precautionary measures. Make sure the local tour operator that you select for boating excursions are reputable and have a good safety record. Also, make sure that you demand a lifejacket regardless of how well you can swim and how short the boating excursion is said to be as it is the bare minimum where safety is concerned. Those who are not feeling well or are feeling under the weather should refrain from signing up for boat tours.

 4. Avoiding Theft and Pickpocketing

Petty thefts and pickpockets are common in most tourist hubs in Vietnam and Hoi An is no exception. This is particularly true in the busy streets of the Hoi An Ancient Town where large crowds gather to enjoy the sights, go shopping and explore the many heritage sites in the area. It is necessary to keep tabs on your belongings at all times when one is out in public in Hoi An as some pickpockets will work in groups and have one person approach and distract you while another snatches your handbag or wallet. Avoid carrying wads of cash during trips outside the hotel as it will draw the attention of thieves when you are perusing the contents of your bag. Keep your passport, identity card and other valuable documents in a separate compartment so that even if your money is stolen, you need not lose your travel documents.

5. After Dark Policy

Female travellers should avoid walking the streets of Hoi An after hours as there are not only robbers but also drug and alcohol addicts that can harass the fairer sex during these ungodly hours. If you are partying late, make sure you are not too far from your base hotel or have a means of reaching the resort without hailing a taxi off the street.
