How to prepare for the weather in Phuket during your trip – Better safe than sorry!
Phuket is definitely on the top of everyone’s list of places to travel to at some point in their lives. With stunning beaches, amazing food and wonderful communities of warm people locally and globally there is so much to be gained by simply staying there for a week. While many people are accustomed to the weather patterns of South East Asia, those new to this kind of climate will need to come prepared so that they can still endeavour to have a good time.
What is the weather like throughout the year?
Being located in Southern Thailand, Phuket experiences what is referred to as a tropical monsoon climate. This means that the region is sandwiched between hot wet monsoon, the cool, dry monsoon as well as a sunny transitional period. This effectively gives this region 3 seasons.
The rainy season is something that takes place between May to October as moisture dense winds blow over from the Indian ocean. The season that is generally considered to be winter takes place between October to February while Summer essentially takes place from February to May.
If this is a bit complicated to process, contact some of the best pool villas in Phuket such as the Layan Residences by Anantara and they will be able to provide you with some much-needed insight into how to coordinate your travel plans.
Make the most of the seasons!
While some people may be discouraged by the variety of seasons in Phuket, it can also open up opportunities or ideal scenarios for many others. For example, if you are a surfing enthusiast, then the rainy season may be something you look forward to. While swimmers will be out of luck during this period, the waves that are going to be taller and stronger will make an ideal playground for experienced surfers from across the globe.
Additionally, the rain-free months during winter will make for perfect diving conditions. There is no greater blessing than warm sun and gentle waters for exploring the beauty that lies beneath the ocean. For those wondering, the ideal time is during the months of November to April.
If there is anyone interested in windsurfing, then they should make it a point to visit Phuket during the months of November and February to enjoy flatter waves and steady waves. That being said, these weathers would still be ideal for experienced windsurfers!
What to pack for the weather?
Being prepared is the key to a good trip and it all starts with your luggage. Bringing the right items at the right time will save you a lot of grief when you are at your destination, as well as a lot of money! During the summer in Phuket, things are quite straight forward. Simply bring with you light clothing that will help you stay cool during the heat and if you are hoping to take part in Songkran, it does not hurt to bring along a super soaker.
During the winter months, be sure to bring along plenty of sunscreen so that you can protect yourself at all time and a pair of polarised sunglasses will do wonders as well. This period will likely never require you to wear winter attire as it never goes below 18 degrees Celsius.
The rainy season will likely require some more planning to battle both the wet weather and the humidity. It is recommended to bring along an umbrella for the rain and linen shirts for the humidity. It would also be a good idea to bring along some insect repellent as it will help keep away the mosquitoes that become active during the rainy season.
