Getting to Koh Samui by bus

Although travelling by train will generally be preferable, it will also be possible to take the bus to travel from Bangkok to Koh Samui. This mode of transport will have the advantage of departing from Bangkok speedily as you will be able to board a bus relatively quickly at the bus station. The buses will take you to the ferry terminal at Don Sak in Surat Thani, from where you will be able to board a ferry that will transport you to Koh Samui.

The bus ride to Surat Thani from Bangkok should take you between 10 and 12 hours; from there, you will need between 2 and 4 hours more to reach Koh Samui, depending on when the ferry arrives.

There will be two varieties of buses that you can take to reach Koh Samui from Bangkok; the most reliable and cheapest option would be the public buses which depart from the Sai Tai Mai terminal. The other option would be the private buses which depart from Khao San Road.
