How to Enjoy a Safe Trip to Oman
The Sultanate of Oman is a land blessed with a rich heritage and natural beauty be it by the coast, in the mountains or amidst stunning desert landscapes. It offers much to explore and experience for intrepid travellers, while also providing seclusion for those in search of some sublime rest and relaxation. As with any country, you need to keep in mind cultural traditions as well as local rules regulations which will help to ensure a memorable stay.
Keep in Mind Safety & Health Protocols
Global and local travel as changed drastically due to COVID-19 and one should be up to date with the latest safety and health protocols in place before a visit. Added to this, is the need for accommodation that is following the requirements of local health departments as well as the guidelines of the World Health Organisation. Be it in Muscat, Al Jabal Al Akhdar or Salalah, hotels and resorts can be found which offer such comprehensive health and sanitisation measures for a safe stay.
Dress Appropriately When Out & About
Remember, this is a Muslim nation and it has strict rules including what to wear in public. When out on tours or visiting attractions in Oman, it is best to wear conservative attire. Ideally, men should avoid sleeveless t-shirts and shorts, while women should have their shoulders, midriff, thighs and chest covered; women do not have to cover the head unless they plan to visit a mosque. Do not wear bikinis or speedos at public beaches, though you do have more freedom at private beaches offered by properties the likes of Al Baleed Resort Salalah by Anantara.
Be Respectful of the Local Culture
It is important to be aware of the cultural norms and traditions to not offend the locals. When conversing with them, stay away from criticising the country or government officials, while it is also taboo to mock or make fun of the sultan. Omani people are generally calm and one should avoid any loud arguments or displaying anger in public.
If you happen to be invited to a local home, remember to take footwear off before entering; it is also better to take even a small gift as it can be considered rude to arrive without one. Liquor can be bought and consumed at establishments that have a liquor license, though remember that it is illegal to get publicly intoxicated. When in public, also keep in mind to minimise or limit any public displays of affection and if you want to take pictures of the locals, always ask beforehand and get their permission.
Be Mindful of Road Safety
Sometimes, one may choose to hire a car or 4WD and head off on excursions in Oman. For those who plan to do so there are some things to be mindful of, including that in certain areas you need to be careful of camels coming onto the road! The conditions of the roads can vary in some parts and it is best to ensure you have spare tires, water, food and other supplies especially if traversing desert or remote locales. Also be mindful that there will be occasions for flash floods, even in the desert; in such instances, always look to find higher ground.
