This is a country in Southern Africa which is surrounded by land on all sides. During the seasonal times of the year, this is a great place for animals and all kinds of exotic wildlife. The biggest attraction in Botswana is the Central Kalahari Game Reserve which is home to various animals including cheetahs, wild dogs, hyenas and giraffes. The whole country itself is about 1,000 kilometres in total and, therefore, it is one of the best places to go on a road trip because you can cover so much when you are in Botswana even for a few days. Botswana is bordered by South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia. Gaborone is the capital of Botswana and there are many things to do in Gaborone so it is best to situate yourself at a centrally located hotel in this capital the likes of Avani Gaborone Resort & Casino.
How to get to Botswana
There are many intercontinental flights that will take you to this country but keep in mind that they are a bit more expensive if you are flying close the borders. A good place to fly to is Johannesburg, and from there, it takes only 2 hours to drive to Botswana and you can begin your road trip from there.
How to travel around Botswana
The best way to travel within Africa is to hire yourself a 4 by 4 vehicle. All you need to hire it is an international licence or any other documentation. Keep in mind that you must not drive drunk and go too speedily on the roads. Most parts of the country belong to the wildlife and the animals who live there. Thus, if you are going to speed, you will not be able to stop the vehicle in time and avoid hitting when these animals cross the road or jump in front of your vehicle suddenly. The best thing about hiring yourself a 4 by 4 is that you can also drive the safaris yourself through all the national parks in the country instead of booking a safari tour and guide. If your budget is low, however, you can pack yourself a tent and travel using local transportation, but if your budget allows, definitely choose to drive yourself around the country as it will give you more flexibility on such a road trip.
The must cover places during your road trip to Botswana
The first stop you must make during your road trip is at the Khama Rhino Sanctuary. Here, you will be able to drive around the sanctuary and spot black and white rhinos, giraffes, zebras and so many more animals that are exotic in the other parts of the world. The place is not vast, so you will be able to spot these animals soon and not have to drive around for hours on the end to spot one or two animals. You can also say in the reserve for the sunset; some of the best photographed African wildlife sunsets were taken here. The next stop during the road trip would be at Kubu Island which is a gorgeous place to kill time at. Back in the day, this used to be a massive inland ocean and the island itself covers just about one kilometre and you can easily park your vehicle and walk around. There are many mini campsites on the island and you can choose to stay here if you want. Afterwards, you must stop at the Planet Baobab. This is yet another popular campsite and is a great stop if you want to take a break from your road trip for a day or two.
