How to Explore Hon Kho Island in Quy Nhon, Vietnam

Off the shores of Quy Nhon city is a small rocky island that is uninhabited yet boasts of great natural beauty and alluring terrain. For those who are into adventure, there is no better choice than Hon Kho island where you have the freedom to explore at your own pace. Here's how to make the most of a trip to the island of Hon Kho.


Getting there

If you are lodged at one of the neighbouring cities, Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh you'll first need to reach Quy Nhon to get to the island. Travelling by plane is possible, still, this is an expensive option. Once you arrive at the airport, you'll need to take a taxi to the Quy Nhon city's main town. This would roughly cost about 400,000 VND – 500,000 VND. The bus is an alternative option and will cost just 50,000 VND per person. You can also rent out a bike for the day and travel easily from Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi. If you plan to do so, then use the National Highway 1A to Nguyen Hue.

If you are staying at a Quy Nhon hotel, travelling to the island is much easier. Keep in mind that you can't travel to the island directly from the main town in Quy Nhon. So, hop a taxi to the fishing village named Nhon Hai and hire a boat to Hon Kho island from there. The journey from here will take about 10 to 15 minutes.

The best time to visit Hon Kho Island

The whole point of visiting Hon Kho, also known as Dry Island, is for the ultimate island adventure. There are rocks to climb, mountainous terrain to explore and stunning beaches perfect for sunbathing and a swim. Therefore, visiting when the weather is clear is key to enjoy the island to the utmost. If you are planning a visit to the island for an adventure of your own, make sure it is between March and September. The waters are calm, and the weather is ideal during this time of the year.

Things to do

The reason why Hon Kho is also called Dry Island is that there is hardly any vegetation to be seen. Instead, there's rocky, mountainous terrain and just sandy beach all around. The island is way too small for buildings to be set up, so there are no human settlements here. Nonetheless, the island is a major tourist attraction.

The rocky roads are difficult to climb, but still offers rewarding views of the city of Quy Nhon if you choose to conquer them. The pristine beaches are the next highlight of the island. You can bake in the sun and go back with a beautiful tan. The waters here are shallow and perfect for snorkelling, the clarity is great so long as there is no rain. You can even go fishing with the fisherman if you are up for the task.

There is also another attraction that you can explore while on the way to the island. Visit Mai Huong Pagoda in Nhon Hai village. The pagoda in itself is wonderful and boasts beautiful views of Han Kho too.
