How to Have a Family Vacation in Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka is an island on the Indian Ocean that holds many amazing attractions and things to do with family and friends. From little cafes to high-end restaurants and colonial architecture ruins from the historic era and much more await the travelling family. With 5-star accommodation at affordable rates, the island is one of the best places in the world for a family vacation.
Kandy
The easiest way to get to Kandy is to get the train from Colombo to Kandy. You can either opt for 1st class where you can travel in a luxurious air-conditioned compartment but remember that your booking has to be made at least a month in advance. Or you could choose to travel as the locals do so often in 2nd class or 3rd class without having to make a booking. The train takes the scenic route, so you'll have plenty of views to enjoy, keep your camera at the ready!
Once you reach Kandy you will find that the main town is quite small and getting about is no issue at all. You can always explore by foot which is the recommended option, or you could get to your attractions by tuk-tuk which is sure to be fun and quick too. Walk down the streets and you'll find a trail of colonial buildings that are not in use, but still has the original boards depicting which offices were there at the time. This trail will lead you to the famed Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic. Enter and explore this ancient gold-roofed temple and marvel at the sheer number of devotees seen at any time of day at the temple. Bahirawa Kanda and the Kandy Lake are other attractions apart from the many hiking trails here. There are plenty of bungalows and star hotels nestled in the beautiful green hills of Kandy.
Udawalawe
Some of the best things about Sri Lanka are in its wildlife and nature where the true charms lie. Udawalawe National Park, although not as popular as Yala National Park is still a place that you can't miss. If you are travelling with kids, they are definitely going to love watching the elephants in their natural habitat. But elephants aren't the only thing you get to see here, there are monkeys messing around in the trees, peacocks showing off their feathers and even the slimy reptiles sticking their tongues out. Instead of a traditional hotel stay, how about glamping in Udawalawe and keeping it close to nature? There are many options for a glamping stay here so make use of them.
Beach destinations
Since Sri Lanka is an island, it comes as no surprise that the beaches are amazing here. There are beach destinations in all directions of the country. In the north, there are a few islands that are loved by tourists that you could try visiting. Towards the west is are beaches like Marawila beach which is an amazing shoreline, unspoiled with clean beige sands and clear cerulean waters. In the east is Trincomalee which boasts a beautiful natural harbour and untouched pristine beaches. In the south is Galle, a town holding much historic significance and yet another stunning beach. Many a beach hotel in Sri Lanka are available offering star class amenities. Amagi Beach is one such example. You can also enjoy a plethora of water sports like surfing, jet-skiing, kitesurfing, snorkelling, diving and more. Don't forget to go whale watching with the kids, they are sure to enjoy this experience as well.
Colombo city
The most developed and loved urban city of Sri Lanka is Colombo city on the west coast. You can stay in a city hotel for a full city experience here. There a number of restaurants and cafes to go here, but the most popular food in Sri Lanka is the street food on Galle Face Green. There are malls, cinemas and all busy roads to observe with plenty of markets in Pettah!
