How to get ready for a paddleboarding excursion

Paddle-boarding isn't as quite self-explanatory as you'd think – well almost. Paddle-boarders stand on a surfboard and use a paddle to propel themselves forward. The surfboard, however, is not you traditional as is unique to stand-up paddle-boarding. The Maldives is a great place to get into water sports.

1. Find a great resort

The Maldives is famous for being home to many award-winning resorts which cater to a plethora of water sports to their visitors. But some are very specifically known for a particular activity. Out of all the Maldives Island Resorts, one, in particular, stands out as a great place for paddle-boarding - Naladhu Private Island Maldives. For beginners and pros alike the ocean around this resort is ideal for paddle-boarding and the resort itself is truly a wonderful place to stay at.

2. Choose your board

A paddleboard isn't the same as surfboards and if you are a beginner or a budding enthusiast it's unlikely that you'll own your board. The best option for you if so is to rent a paddle-board. Boards come in a variety of sizes and are specified differently to accommodate different purposes. The best thing to do if you don't know which board to pick is to ask the shop owner to help you – tell him or her, your requirement and they'll gear you up in no time.

A planning hull paddleboard or a displacement hull paddleboard can be used for leisurely boarding or yoga. However, if fitness or racing is your goal you'd be better suited with an inflatable paddleboard.
The perfect board for kids or if you're only planning on paddle-boarding in about less than 10 feet of water is the shortboard. Medium length boards are good for up to 12 feet and longboard if you're planning to go into water deeper than 12 feet.

3. Pick a paddle

Paddles also come in a variety of shapes and sizes. For example, the paddle used by recreational boarders is about 12 inches taller than your height. If you're going surfing you'd be better equipped with a paddle that's shorter than the recreational size and if you're racing you definitely should opt for a paddle that is longer than the recreational size. Paddles are made using many materials and each has its benefits and shortcomings. If you are a beginner its best to consult the shopkeeper from where you're renting out the gear to equip you with a paddle that best fits your requirement.

4. Insist on a life jacket

In most places around the world, adults aren't necessarily required to wear a life jacket though there are a few select places where it is mandatory. You would, however, be wise to wear one if you are unfamiliar with the sea and not a great swimmer. Kids must wear life jackets while paddle-boarding where ever in the world you are.

5. Get all the necessary equipment

The other items that you should have with you when paddle-boarding are a whistle (in case you require rescue), a light (in case it gets dark), a leash (so your board doesn't drift away from you)
It is perfectly advisable to wear a swimsuit in warm weather and a wet-suit or a dry-suit for cooler climates.

6. Learn the proper strokes

There are a few strokes you need to master to get around on a paddleboard. The most obvious is the front stroke which will help you propel forwards. The backwards stroke will help you slow down and the swipe stroke will help you turn the board. Once you have the basics down the rest you can learn on the go while having fun in the sea.
